DENIS (Ferdinand) - Lot 39
DENIS (Ferdinand) Ferdinand Denis Paris, 1798 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1890. Traveler, historian, bibliographer and administrator of the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, renowned specialist in Brazilian history and literature. L.A.S. to Ferdinand Denis, December 3, 1868; 1 p. in-8. Interesting letter concerning the university situation of a correspondent's son and the steps taken with Ferdinand Denis to help him pass a bachelor's degree examination. The author warmly thanks Denis for "your kind support", explaining that his son, suffering from "a serious indisposition", had been unable to sit the exam for which he was destined. He added that the young man would now have to sit "again next month" for an exam covering "both bachelor's degree examinations". The letter testifies to the importance of the intellectual and academic networks around the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, and Ferdinand Denis's role as a recommender to students and young scholars. The correspondent insists on the previous recommendations obtained thanks to Denis, and hopes to benefit from his support in this new endeavor. A revealing document of Ferdinand Denis's personal relations with the Parisian scholarly and bibliophile world during the Second Empire, in a climate of trust and academic mutual aid. Very good condition. Usual folds. Beautiful 19th-century cursive handwriting.
