DENIS (Ferdinand) Ferdinand Denis Paris, 1798 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1890. Traveler, historian, bibliographer and administrator of the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, renowned specialist in Brazilian history and literature. L.A.S. "Ferdinand Denis", on Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève letterhead, Paris, April 26, 1869; 2 pp. in-8, with autograph draft enclosed. Interesting letter to a scholarly correspondent about a professor and a scientific publication project. Ferdinand Denis warmly recommends the "excellent and learned professor" he has just met, and states that he is "in the best of spirits". He invites his correspondent to meet Mr. Ortolan the next morning, who will "encourage you". The letter continues with bibliographical and scientific considerations. Denis also thanks his correspondent for the loan of a book which he says he read "with great interest". The enclosed autograph draft, extensively corrected and crossed out, bears witness to the scholar's preparatory work. It includes reflections on a scholarly publication, explorations and documents intended to enrich a historical study, probably in connection with his research on Brazil and travel accounts. Particularly interesting for the study of the intellectual work and scholarly networks surrounding Ferdinand Denis and the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève during the Second Empire. Very fine condition.
