CHARTON, Édouard-Thomas Édouard Charton L.A.S. "Édouard Charton". Paris, July 19, 1849. 1 page in-8 on Magasin pittoresque letterhead. Interesting autograph letter from Édouard Charton, founder of the famous Magasin pittoresque, addressed to the Breton writer Émile Souvestre, author of Calendrier de la mansarde and Les Derniers Bretons. In it, Charton conveys Souvestre's thanks for a token of esteem received on the occasion of his literary work: "When one writes with the desire to do well in the moral sense, the greatest reward one can aspire to is the approval of honest people..." A document representative of the intellectual and editorial networks of the July Monarchy and the Second Republic, bringing together two important figures in nineteenth-century popular and moral literature. The large letterhead of the Magasin pittoresque adds real historical interest to this piece. Paper with minor edgewear and restoration, old folds, without major damage to the text.
