CARNOT, Hippolyte (1801-1888). Republican politician, former - Lot 17
CARNOT, Hippolyte (1801-1888). Republican politician, former Minister of Public Instruction under the Second Republic, influential MP and publicist. Autograph letter signed, "Tresta, August 30, 67", addressed to a friend and political correspondent. A beautiful two-page in-8 letter handwritten in brown ink, in which Hippolyte Carnot discusses diplomatic and personal issues with great freedom of tone. In particular, the signatory mentions a planned move "to the front of the château" and the need "to show in a serious manner" certain arrangements "with Upper Italy". He also mentions several intermediaries and political relations, including "M. Martin" and "Anatole de La Forge", a well-known republican figure of the Second Empire. Carnot goes on to write: "Sicily has been on vacation since last Wednesday; but since you're due to spend a few days in Paris next week, I'll try to go and shake your hand there." The letter ends on a warm, intellectual note, with the signatory regretting not having received a speech delivered at the Sorbonne: "No, I did not receive your excellent speech from the Sorbonne. Please send me back at least one copy. An interesting document combining political considerations, republican networks and personal relationships in the final years of the Second Empire. Two signed in-8 pages. Usual folds; very good condition.
