WALLON (Henri). - Lot 299
WALLON (Henri). Born in Paris, 1879 - died in 1962. French psychologist, physician and philosopher. Professor at the Collège de France, major figure in child psychology, associated with the Langevin-Wallon plan. Autograph letter signed "H. Wallon", addressed to Pierre Abraham. No place given, January 11, 1931. Six pages on writing paper. Very important and lengthy critical letter devoted to Pierre Abraham's recent works, notably Proust (Rieder, 1930) and Les Créatures chez Balzac (Gallimard, 1931). In it, Wallon develops an analysis of great intellectual density, hailing "a very good book, with a powerful and ultimately pathetic allure", and highlighting the conjunction of intuition and analysis in his approach to the individual. He insists on the psychological depth achieved by Abraham, evoking a veritable exploration of "the effort against intimate distress". The letter then turns to a fundamental reflection on the relationship between introspection, literature and psychology, clearly distinguishing between scientific approaches and literary testimonies, while emphasizing their complementarity. He recognizes in the works studied a remarkable ability to shed light on human reactions and the mechanisms of thought. An exceptional letter of literary criticism and psychology, of rare breadth (six pages), testifying to the intellectual dialogue between two major figures of interwar French thought.
