VOGÜÉ (Eugène-Melchior de) - Lot 290
VOGÜÉ (Eugène-Melchior de) Born in Nice, 1848 - died in 1910. Diplomat, writer and literary critic, member of the Académie française, major figure in the dissemination of Russian literature in France. Autograph bill signed "E.-M. de Vogüé", addressed to "Monsieur". Versailles, July 12 [s.d.]. 1 page in-12 oblong. Mourning paper. A short bill imbued with worldly courtesy, in which Vogüé declines an invitation because of a recent bereavement: "My recent bereavement will deprive me of the pleasure of attending your banquet on July 18...". He does, however, express his wish to renew his congratulations to "our eminent compatriot Maître Albert Danet", a testimony to the networks of esteem and intellectual and legal sociability of the late 19th century. This document, with its sober, elegant tone, illustrates the epistolary customs and codes of the literary and diplomatic world of the Third Republic.
