VILLEMESSANT (Hippolyte Auguste de Launay de) - Lot 287
VILLEMESSANT (Hippolyte Auguste de Launay de) Born in Rouen, 1810 - 1879. French journalist, founder and director of Le Figaro. L.A.S. "H de Villemessant" to "Mon cher directeur", undated (Friday), 1 page in-8, letterhead Le Figaro, rue Rossini, 5. Charming autograph letter from Hippolyte de Villemessant, written on Le Figaro's famous letterhead, a document of great interest for the history of the Parisian press. In this mundane and slightly ironic bill, Villemessant tells his correspondent of his intention to attend a theatrical performance: "My dear director, I intend to honor your theater this evening with my presence." He specifies that he will be accompanied by: "I will go with my wife". and solicits with elegant casualness: "You'll be very kind to give me a good box". The formula, lively and witty, perfectly captures the tone of social and cultural relations in Second Empire Paris. Very fine full-length signature: "H. de Villemessant Of particular interest because of its letterhead from Le Figaro, the newspaper that Villemessant turned into one of the greatest press organs of the XIXᵉ century. Very fine condition.
