VÉRON, Louis-Désiré - Lot 286
VÉRON, Louis-Désiré (Paris, 1798 - 1867) Physician, journalist and politician, director of the Paris Opera and a leading figure in the press under the July Monarchy. Autograph letter signed "Véron", addressed to Jules Guérin. [S.l.], December 10, 1840. 1 page in-4. Interesting letter relating to the world of the press and the dissemination of scientific and medical ideas in the XIXᵉ century. Véron recommends to his correspondent, the physician Jules Guérin, the insertion of an article in the Gazette médicale de Paris, an influential organ of which Guérin is the founder and director. He supports the request of a third party, "friend and neighbor", emphasizing the qualities of the text: "I find it well thought out and well written", and insists on the interest of giving it "publicity", highlighting the magazine's role of intellectual arbitration and influence. This letter illustrates the mechanisms of recommendation and the networks of influence between the press, medicine and the intellectual world under the July monarchy. It also testifies to Véron's central position in these circles, at the crossroads of medicine, journalism and Parisian cultural life. A document characteristic of editorial and relational practices in the XIXᵉ century.
