VANDAL, Albert (Paris, 1853 - 1910), historian and writer, d - Lot 283
VANDAL, Albert (Paris, 1853 - 1910), historian and writer, doctor of law, professor at the École libre des sciences politiques. C.A.S. "Albert Vandal" to a correspondent. S.l.n.d. [Paris, 10 rue Lincoln]. 1 page in-12 on headed paper. A friendly, spontaneous autograph bill from Albert Vandal, in which the historian invites his correspondent to a Sunday visit. The tone is simple and cordial, revealing the intellectual sociability of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Vandal proposes to receive his interlocutor "Sunday evening around 6:1/2", specifying that he will "certainly" be at home and that he would have "great pleasure in chatting" with him. He added that he would be leaving on Monday for a few days, giving this invitation an urgent and detailed character. The brief but lively letter testifies to the network of contacts maintained by this major historian of the late 19th century, a recognized specialist in European diplomacy and the Napoleonic era, and the author of major works on Napoleon and Alexander I. Transcription: "Dear Sir, If you could drop by my place Sunday evening around 6:1/2, you'd certainly find me and I'd be delighted to have a chat with you. I'm leaving on Monday for a few days. Yours sincerely Albert Vandal " A lovely piece, typical of the courteous exchanges between men of letters and historians during the Third Republic.
