TURR (Étienne, known as Stefano Türr) (1825-1910) - Lot 281
TURR (Étienne, known as Stefano Türr) (1825-1910) Hungarian general in the service of Piedmont, companion of Garibaldi, diplomat and politician. Set of printed and autographed documents relating to General Türr, including: a business card printed in Nice, autographed "Regina Hotel Bernasson"; three illustrated press articles and biographical notes, in French, tracing his military and political career; a large illustrated biographical plate with engraved portrait; an autograph sheet signed by Türr, on paper illustrated with his engraved portrait, addressed to M. Maiziani. Very fine documentary set devoted to an important figure in the Italian Risorgimento and European revolutionary movements of the XIXᵉ century. Born in Baïa, Hungary, Étienne Türr first joined the Austrian army before rallying to the Piedmontese cause in 1848. He fought alongside Garibaldi, took part in the Expedition of the Thousand and became one of the architects of Italian unity. His marriage to Adeline Bonaparte-Wyse, cousin of Napoleon III, further enhanced his reputation in European political and diplomatic circles. The interest of this lot lies in the combination of an authentic autograph, his personal visiting card and several period printed testimonials illustrating his reception by the French press. Condition: good overall, with the usual foxing and marginal wear, folds and small tears to the press clippings; the carte de visite and autograph folio are well preserved.
