STOLTZ (Joseph-Alexis, 1803-1896). - Lot 271
STOLTZ (Joseph-Alexis, 1803-1896). Physician, professor at the Strasbourg and then Nancy medical schools. L.A.S. "Stoltz" to "Mon cher Monsieur Roth". Strasbourg, January 5, 1870. 1 p. in-8 on mourning paper. Beautiful autograph letter signed by the famous Alsatian physician Joseph-Alexis Stoltz, an important figure in Strasbourg medicine in the XIXᵉ century. Dated Strasbourg a few months before the events of 1870, the letter is addressed to Monsieur Roth and concerns Stoltz's intervention with the Postmaster General to obtain the retention of a certain Gresner in his position as receiver. The doctor reports having held a lengthy interview with the Post Office administration, but without achieving the desired result: "I was unable to obtain from him the assurance that Gresner would be maintained in Sélestat as a receiver..." He adds, in a highly personal phrase indicative of the tone of the letter: "I have mitigated the wrongs of aggression as much as I could, I have even done too much perhaps, but I am by no means sure that I have succeeded." An interesting mix of private correspondence, recommendation and Alsatian administrative context on the eve of the Franco-Prussian war. The mourning paper lends the whole a sober, elegant presentation.
