SICARD (Roch Ambroise Cucurron, known as l'abbé). - Lot 268
SICARD (Roch Ambroise Cucurron, known as l'abbé). Born in Le Fousseret in 1742 - died in 1822. Pedagogue, director of the Institut des Sourds-Muets in Paris, author of several works on the education of the deaf. Autograph letter signed "L'abbé Sicard", addressed to M. Tardieu, engraver at the Institution impériale des sourds-muets. Paris, Sunday, May 4, 1806. 1 page in-4, on printed letterhead of the Directeur de l'Institution impériale des sourds-muets. Address and remainder of seal. Interesting letter concerning the life and influence of the Institution. Sicard announces the imminent visit of a high-ranking figure, "His Royal Highness, the Prince of Bavaria", and invites his correspondent, presented as one of the institution's most distinguished teachers, to join this reception in the company of two students, in order to showcase their talents to the visitor. The author emphasizes the exemplary role of his correspondent, whose qualities should illustrate the excellence of the education provided for deaf-mutes. In a postscript, he recommends the utmost discretion, to avoid crowds during this official visit. This document reveals the prestige acquired by the Imperial Institution in the early 19th century, and Sicard's concern to promote its educational successes. Small marginal loss of paper due to opening of the letter. Outer folds slightly yellowed.
