SARRAUT (Albert). - Lot 266
SARRAUT (Albert). [MINISTRY OF THE COLONIES]. SARRAUT (Albert). 1872-1962. French statesman, several times Minister and President of the Council. 2 typed letters signed "A. Sarraut", as Minister of Colonies, addressed to Gaston Doumergue. Paris, March 15, 1922 and August 4, 1923. 2 folio pages, on Ministère des Colonies - Cabinet du Ministre letterhead. Nice set of two official letters signed by Albert Sarraut, then Minister of Colonies, addressed to Gaston Doumergue, future President of the Republic (1924-1931), then President of the Senate. These documents, on official French Republic paper, concern the recommendation of Mr. Halliot, representative and then director of the Compagnie franco-éthiopienne du chemin de fer de Djibouti à Addis-Abeba, for the award of the Croix d'Officier de la Légion d'honneur. Sarraut acknowledged Doumergue's intervention and responded with the administrative courtesy characteristic of the Third Republic: "I have taken good note of your recommendation". and adds: "I will not fail [...] to examine with the greatest benevolence Mr. Halliot's qualifications for the distinction you are seeking for him". The letter, dated August 4, 1923, specifies that this distinction could be considered on the occasion of the Marseille National Colonial Exhibition, a particularly significant context for French imperial policy at the time. Interesting set, as it brings together two major political figures of the Third Republic: Albert Sarraut, a major figure in French colonial policy Gaston Doumergue, future President of the Republic These documents perfectly illustrate the mechanisms of recommendation, official decorations and networks of influence surrounding French colonial administration and major rail projects in East Africa. Courtesy annotations in the margins ("avec mes cordiales salutations", etc.) reinforce the personal nature of these official exchanges. Very fine presentation set.
