ROBINSON, Ray Sugar (Walker Smith Jr., 1921-1989) - Lot 254
ROBINSON, Ray Sugar (Walker Smith Jr., 1921-1989) World boxing legend, universally regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. World welterweight champion in 1946, then middleweight on several occasions. Original black & white silver photograph, approx. 20 × 25 cm, showing Ray Sugar Robinson alongside French boxer Raymond Famechon (1924-1978), surrounded by members of their respective families, posing on the deck of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique liner S/S Liberté. Stamp on reverse: "S/S LIBERTÉ - Cie Gle Transatlantique - French Line - Photos Louis Hamon". Beautiful scene taken on the deck of the famous liner Liberté, former flagship of the French Line, where Robinson appears in a moment of family relaxation, far from the classic image of the champion in the ring. The joint presence of two great names in international and French boxing makes this photograph of particular interest to both sports fans and collectors of maritime photographs.
