REBELLIAU (Alfred) (Nantes, 1858 - 1934) Historian, librarian and teacher. Director of the Thiers Foundation. Member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques (elected in 1913). Specialist in contemporary history and leading figure in Parisian academia. Autograph visiting card signed, "A. Rebelliau", addressed to André Le Breton. S.l., February 9, 1928. 2 oblong pages. Mourning card printed with his name, address and titles. Letter of thanks for a book on Victor Hugo Rebelliau thanks his correspondent for sending his book La Jeunesse de Victor Hugo, which he has just received and carefully read. He praises the book's stylistic and historical qualities, describing it as "substantial and charming", with a lively and generous approach: "...the vivid picture of its dazzling auroras..." He also insists on the interest of this study for new generations, recalling the need to transmit the image of Victor Hugo in all its richness: "...his posthumous glory is still needed by new generations...". The letter is thus a token of esteem between men of letters, in the context of the critical reception of a work dedicated to one of the great figures of the French literary pantheon. Of interest Document of interest by : the status of the signatory, a member of the Institut and director of the Fondation Thiers ; its place in the Parisian academic milieu of the early 20th century; its link with the reception of a work dedicated to Victor Hugo, a recurring and promising theme; the use of a mourning calling card, typical of epistolary practice at the time. This piece illustrates the practices of intellectual sociability and critical exchanges between authors and historians. Context Alfred Rebelliau belongs to a generation of academics committed to the transmission of historical and literary heritage. His work, like his correspondence, bears witness to the vitality of scholarly networks around great figures such as Victor Hugo.
