QUESNAY DE BEAUREPAIRE (Jules) - Lot 244
QUESNAY DE BEAUREPAIRE (Jules) Saumur, 1834 - Paris, 1923. French magistrate and writer. Autograph letter signed "Jules Quesnay de Beaurepaire", addressed to "Mon cher collègue". Paris, July 20, 1890. 1 page ¾ in-8. Interesting letter of a professional and personal nature, in which Quesnay de Beaurepaire thanks his correspondent for his congratulations and echoes glowing appreciations received from the Attorney General, hailing the brilliant position acquired by his interlocutor at the Court of Besançon. The tone, both courteous and warm, reflects the esteem in which he is held, while also testifying to the customs and networks of the judicial world at the end of the 19th century. The letter continues with more intimate news of his wife's health, whose condition, though still fragile, shows signs of improvement, raising hopes of a forthcoming stay in the country. This alternation between professional affairs and family concerns lends the document an appreciable human dimension. A leading figure in the judiciary, Quesnay de Beaurepaire was notably a prosecutor at the Paris Court of Appeal, and played a controversial role during the Dreyfus Affair, drawing up the indictment against General Boulanger before resigning when the Dreyfus affair was brought before the Court of Cassation. An interesting document for French judicial history during the Third Republic.
