PORTIER (Paul) - Lot 240
PORTIER (Paul) Bar-sur-Seine, 1866 - 1962. French marine biologist. Deputy director at the École pratique des hautes études (1906). Autograph letter signed "P. Portier", addressed to "Mon cher Maurice". Paris, January 31, 1925. 2 pages in-12 oblong. Printed letterhead: "Institut Océanographique, 136 rue Saint-Jacques". Interesting letter concerning the circulation and valorization of scientific documents within naturalist circles. Portier informs his correspondent that the zoologist Charles Gravier (known as Joubin) "gratefully" accepts the offer of scientific papers from the late M. Drouet. He emphasizes that Joubin and his preparator Germain, perfectly familiar with the deceased's work, will be able to "make the most of it". The letter highlights the role of specialists in the exploitation of scientific archives, particularly in the field of mollusc systematics, a discipline in full development at the time. Finally, Portier suggests that the documents be handed over to the Institut Océanographique, confirming the importance of this institution in centralizing and preserving knowledge. A revealing document of scholarly networks and scientific collection transmission practices in the early XXᵉ century.
