PORTIER (Paul) - Lot 236
PORTIER (Paul) Bar-sur-Seine, 1866 - Paris, 1962. French marine biologist, collaborator with Charles Richet in the discovery of anaphylaxis; assistant director at the École pratique des hautes études. Autograph letter signed "P. Portier", addressed to "Mon cher ami". Paris, April 9, 1927. 2 pages in-12 oblong, on letterhead of Université de Paris, Faculté des Sciences, Laboratoire de physiologie comparée (Sorbonne, rue Victor-Cousin). Friendly letter in which Portier takes news of his correspondent and his entourage, mentioning with solicitude a certain Franck, whose situation he hopes will improve. The tone is warm and sincere, reflecting close personal ties. He goes on to mention a recent meeting with Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who spoke highly of Mlle Marthe, something that particularly touched him. Portier finely underlines the esteem in which this family is held, noting that the children are "faithful reflections of the parents", a remark that testifies to his sense of observation and his attachment to family values. The letter closes with an admiring assessment of Charcot, described as "very chic", adding a touch of vivacity and spontaneity to the whole. An engaging document, revealing the scholar's relational network and his involvement in the scientific and intellectual circles of his time.
