PORTIER (Paul) - Lot 231
PORTIER (Paul) Bar-sur-Seine, 1866 - Paris, 1962. French marine biologist, collaborator with Charles Richet in the discovery of anaphylaxis; assistant director at the École pratique des hautes études. Autograph card signed "P. Portier", addressed to "Mon cher Maurice" [Maurice Emmanuel]. Paris, December 10, 1926. 1 page in-8, on engraved letterhead of the Institut océanographique (Fondation Albert Ier, Prince of Monaco), with galleon and escutcheon. A touching card of condolence in which Portier expresses his deep sorrow at the death of his brother-in-law. The tone, simple and sincere, is marked by restrained emotion: "The disappearance of my brother-in-law has caused me [...] great sorrow, and his thought hardly leaves me". The scholar paints a gentle portrait of the deceased, whom he describes as "a man a little weak, but so perfectly good", adding aptly that "they are the ones one regrets the most". This very human phrase lends a real intensity to this brief bill. A moving document, revealing the sensitivity and intimate dimension of a major scientist at a time of grief.
