PORTIER (Paul) - Lot 230
PORTIER (Paul) Bar-sur-Seine, 1866 - Paris, 1962. French marine biologist and zoologist, collaborator with Charles Richet in the discovery of anaphylaxis. Autograph card signed "P. Portier", addressed to "Mon cher Maurice" [Maurice Emmanuel]. Hotel Belle-Vue, Saint-Beatenberg (Switzerland), undated. 2 pages in-16 oblong. Charming vacation card sent from Switzerland, in which Portier mixes personal notes with witty remarks. Having come "to recharge his batteries in the mountains", he notes, not without irony, that the heat there is comparable to that of the plains, and is severe about the material conditions of the stay, noting that "if the air is pure, the food is dreadful". The map also takes on a certain biographical interest when Portier recalls his appointment as lecturer, recently published in the Officiel. He lucidly weighs up the consequences, anticipating a "big increase in workload", while welcoming the stability it brings. A brief but lively document, illustrating both the familiar tone of Portier's correspondence and a key moment in his academic career.
