PÉTION, Alexandre (1770-1818) - Lot 217
PÉTION, Alexandre (1770-1818) President of the Republic of Haiti from 1807 to 1818, a major figure in Haitian independence and one of the nation's founding fathers. Coin signed "Pétion", Port-au-Prince, November 29, 1814. One folio page on laid paper, with printed letterhead "République d'Hayti", with the motto "Liberté - Égalité". Interesting administrative document signed by President Pétion, addressed to the General Administrator of Finance, concerning the justification and allocation of a public expense. The text, partially abbreviated but legible in its broad outlines, invites the administrator to account for a secret or extraordinary government expenditure, a particularly evocative formula for the operation of the Republic's first institutions: "...invites the general administrator of finances to account for... secret government expenditure..." Very fine autograph signature at the bottom of the document, ample and energetic, with mention of registration with the Treasury: "Enreg. au trésor n° 1938". A historically important document, illustrating the financial administration of the young Haitian state under President Pétion, in a period of political and budgetary consolidation.
