PÉTION, Alexandre (1770-1818) - Lot 214
PÉTION, Alexandre (1770-1818) President of the Republic of Haiti from 1807 to 1818. Letter signed "Pétion" to the General Administrator of Finance, Port-au-Prince, September 4, 1810. Handwritten in-folio on laid paper, under printed header: "République d'Hayti" "7th of Independence". addressed to the General Administrator of Finance. Very interesting administrative document in which Alexandre Pétion orders that a statement be made of the amount of housing occupied by : Captain Benjamin in the house farmed by citizen Blaise, in order to determine the length of occupancy and set a corresponding financial compensation. The text specifies in particular: "to establish the amount of housing occupied by Captain Benjamin (...) and the time he stayed there, in order to compensate him for this value". This document is particularly revealing of the practical workings of the Haitian administration in the early 19th century, in this case concerning the requisition or compensation of housing for military use. Fine autograph signature of Alexandre Pétion at the bottom of the letter. The back of the address, also preserved, reinforces the archival interest of the whole. Satisfactory condition: old folds, small holes and minor marginal damage, but no significant damage to the body of the text or the signature. A highly legible piece of great historical interest for the study of civil and military management under Pétion's presidency.
