PÉTION (Alexandre) - Lot 212
PÉTION (Alexandre) Born in Port-au-Prince, 1770-1818. Military, statesman and one of the main architects of Haitian independence. President of the Republic of Haiti (South) from 1807 to 1818. Signed "Pétion", Port-au-Prince, August 16, 1814. 1 folio page on laid paper, printed header: "Liberté, Égalité - République d'Hayti - Alexandre Pétion, Président d'Hayti". A very interesting administrative and financial document emanating directly from the Haitian presidency. The President invites the Treasurer General to pay a sum of six gourdes from the military fund to Lieutenant Badet Jean Pierre, who is leaving on a mission with the Coast Guard. An emblematic coin from the early years of the independent Haitian state, bearing a large and remarkable signature by Alexandre Pétion, one of the major figures in Caribbean political history and post-colonial emancipation. Alexandre Pétion, Dessalines' successor in the southern part of the island, is considered one of the founders of the Republic of Haiti, and played a key role in supporting Latin American independence movements, notably Simón Bolívar. A document of great historical force.
