PAPIN-DUPONT (Léon) - Lot 206
PAPIN-DUPONT (Léon) Le Lamentin (Martinique), 1797 - Tours, 1876 A major figure of Catholic revival in the XIXᵉ century, an ardent promoter of restorative worship and devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, nicknamed "the man of the Holy Face". Autograph letter signed "P. Dupont" to "Mademoiselle". Tours, November 30, 1861 1 page in-8, autograph address on verso, postmarks, folded. Tear at upper left but no damage to text. A particularly interesting letter of a devotional, almost thaumaturgical nature. Papin-Dupont sends his correspondent "four small vials of oil taken from the lamp burning in front of the Holy Face", specifying the use to be made of them: "Onctions on the sick part - give only one vial to the sick person - it's more than enough since it's a matter of faith! This document bears direct witness to the spiritual practices and beliefs surrounding devotion to the Holy Face, of which Papin-Dupont was one of the main propagators. The lamp oil, reputed for its spiritual and curative virtues, is part of a context of popular religiosity and restorative piety characteristic of the XIXᵉ century. Beautiful letter with handwritten address on verso and visible postmarks, despite marginal accidents.
