OVERBECK (Johann Friedrich) - Lot 203
OVERBECK (Johann Friedrich) Lübeck, 1789 - Rome, 1869 German painter, a major figure in the Nazarene movement, who worked to revive religious art in 19th-century Europe, particularly in Rome, where he spent most of his career. Autograph letter signed "Fred° Overbeck" to "Monseigneur" [S.l.], April 29, 1851 1 page in-4, autograph address on verso, dry stamp, folded. Interesting letter of correspondence, in which Overbeck transmits, on behalf of "Mr. Perret", a communication intended for his ecclesiastical interlocutor: "Having communications to make to V.G. on behalf of Mr. Perret (...) and not having had the good fortune to find you at home, I take the liberty of handing you the enclosed letter...". He asks his correspondent to kindly send a reply to this intermediary, claiming to be prevented by "the quantity of [his] occupations". The tone, respectful and deferential, reflects the painter's closeness to religious circles, an essential characteristic of the Nazarene movement of which he was a leader. After settling in Rome, Overbeck devoted his career to Christian painting, between idealism and a return to the Renaissance masters. Attractive piece with handwritten address on verso, with trace of closing stamp. Usual folds, good overall condition.
