ORFILA (Mathieu) - Anne Gabrielle LESUEUR, his wife - Lot 202
ORFILA (Mathieu) - Anne Gabrielle LESUEUR, his wife Paris, 1793 - 1864. Musician, daughter of sculptor Jacques-Philippe Lesueur. Autograph letter signed "Gᵐᵉ Orfila", addressed to a gentleman. S.l., n.d. 1 page in-8. Interesting letter of recommendation in which Madame Orfila intervenes with strong courtesy on behalf of Mademoiselle Jeanne Blanchet, a candidate in the Conservatoire singing competition. Presumably addressing one of the jurors, she delicately expresses her wish to see the young artist supported: "You must be her judge (...) be good enough to give her your support, her whole ambition is to have your vote". The bill, imbued with elegance and gratitude, underlines the ties of artistic sociability within the cultivated circles of the early XIXᵉ century, where recommendations and networks played a decisive role in musical careers. Madame Orfila gratefully evokes the constant benevolence of her correspondent, which justifies, in her own words, her intervention on the candidate's behalf.
