NAYSSER (A. B.). - Lot 195
NAYSSER (A. B.). Naturalist. L.A.S. "A. B. Naysser" to "Monsieur le Docteur". Cannes, July 18, 1874. 2 pages in-8 (½ double sheet), on squared paper, cursive ink handwriting, autograph signature. Interesting scientific letter concerning the shipment and observation of arachnid specimens (spiders, mygales, scorpions). In compliance with a previous request, the author announces the shipment: "...five flasks of spiders, plus a wooden box containing a live spider with its tent and eggs..." He gives a precise description of the species' way of life: "It inhabits the granitic terrain under the stones... it fixes its tent by five points... I believe it to be nocturnal..." The letter continues with observations on : the tarantula (Tarantula narbonensis, burrow, seasonal behavior) capture difficulties in hot weather empirical methods (farmers, ploughing) small scorpion species, found under stones and bark in wetlands "...I've found them under the bark of rotten trees... never in the sun...".
