MORIN (Gustave François) - Lot 194
MORIN (Gustave François) Rouen, 1809 - 1886. Painter, drawing teacher and curator of the Rouen Museum. L.A.S. "G. Morin" to Monsieur, Rouen, February 28, 1873, 2 pages in-8, on "Musée de Rouen" letterhead. Interesting autograph letter from Gustave Morin, then curator of the Musée de Rouen, written on the museum's official paper. The text deals with a question of acquisition or expression of interest in favor of an artist's family: "Mr. le Maire me fait savoir qu'il aurait été satisfait de donner à la famille de Legrip, un témoignage d'intérêt". Morin goes on to explain the town council's reservations about works entering public collections: "the council expressed to me the desire to see only works of a certain importance enter the collection (...)". Very interesting passage on museum acquisition policy in the XIXᵉ century, particularly sought-after for the history of cultural institutions. The tone becomes more personal when he expresses his regret: "I had not succeeded in the mission entrusted to me". and pays tribute to a departed colleague: "the excellent colleague we lost too soon". The second page, signed "G. Morin, conservateur du musée de Rouen", includes a postscript concerning the restitution or dispatch of paintings, further enhancing the documentary interest of the piece. Good condition. Used folds, minor marginal wear and discreet foxing. Very fine presentation thanks to the printed header.
