MONTYON (Jean-Baptiste, Antoine, Auger, baron de) - Lot 193
MONTYON (Jean-Baptiste, Antoine, Auger, baron de) 1733 - 1820. French philanthropist, Conseiller d'État and founder of the famous Prix de Virtue awarded by the Académie Française. Autograph letter signed, addressed to Monsieur de Malesherbes. June 6, 1787. 1 page in-8. Letter written in the third person, in which Montyon forwards to Malesherbes documents relating to a lawsuit for which the latter is to defend. He expresses his confidence in the addressee, believing that "a good cause cannot be in the hands of a better defender". This document is interesting for its addressee, Chrétien-Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, a major figure in the judiciary and political life under the Ancien Régime, and future defender of Louis XVI, and for its illustration of the relationships of trust between high-ranking servants of the State on the eve of the Revolution.
