MIRBEL (Charles-François Brisseau de) - Lot 188
MIRBEL (Charles-François Brisseau de) Paris, 1776 - 1854. French botanist, member of the Institut, pioneer of plant anatomy and the use of the microscope in the study of plant tissues. Autograph letter signed "Charles Mirbel" addressed to Gaudichaud, member of the Institut de France. Paris, September 13, 1838. 2 pages in-8. Address and postmarks preserved. Printed Muséum d'Histoire naturelle letterhead. A reproduction of a portrait is enclosed. Interesting letter concerning the organization of a scientific trip and the circulation of recommendations in nineteenth-century naturalist circles. Mirbel, on the point of departure of a third party named Piron, regrets that the latter was unable to visit his correspondent and urges him to urgently send his letters of recommendation to Marseille, poste restante, before embarking for Genoa: "...He has urged me to ask you to send him your instructions and letters immediately... He will stay there for three days and then leave for Genoa, where he will embark immediately on his long journey...". The letter testifies to the essential role played by scholarly networks in the preparation of scientific expeditions, as well as the circulation of people and knowledge between Paris and the major Mediterranean ports. Mirbel emphasizes the scientific interest of the voyage, particularly for natural history and botany, fields in which he played a founding role. Significant document for the history of botany and scientific travel in the 19th century, enhanced by an institutional letterhead from the Muséum. Good condition.
