MICHELET (Jules) - Lot 185
MICHELET (Jules) 1798 - 1874 French historian. L.A.S. "Michelet" to Monsieur Kurz. S.l.n.d. (circa mid-19ᵉ century). 2 pages in-8. Interesting letter in which Jules Michelet once again solicits his correspondent's help in finding him a secretary who meets precise requirements. The historian describes in great detail the profile he is looking for: a solid education, particularly in Germany, "especially in law, at some good German university", an excellent command of French, a willingness to work and a taste for study. He also insists on the candidate's ability to learn from his own work, with the research, extracts and translations entrusted to him enriching his knowledge, particularly in history and Roman law. Michelet goes on to specify the practical conditions of the job, mentioning a steady rhythm "from eight in the morning to five in the afternoon, Sundays included", as well as terms of remuneration that depended "on his ability and the help I would draw from it". He concludes by setting an ideal age for this collaborator, "between twenty and twenty-five", and urges his correspondent to send him a suitable person as soon as possible. A vivid and concrete testimony to Michelet's working methods and the material organization of his intellectual activity, this letter sheds rare light on the use of secretaries in the historiographical production of the XIXᵉ century.
