MICHAUD (Joseph-François) - Lot 183
MICHAUD (Joseph-François) (1767-1839) French historian, member of the Académie française, author of Histoire des Croisades. L.A.S. "Michaud de l'Académie française" to a prefect S.l. [Paris?], August 7 (or 9), no year. 1 page in-4. Letter of recommendation for a conscript deemed unfit for service Interesting letter in which Michaud intercedes with the prefectoral authorities to obtain a measure of clemency for a young man called up for military service. He emphatically requests the prefect's "humanity and benevolence" in favor of a certain Adolphe Gorre (or Gorres), designated for conscription (n°163 of the 4th arrondissement), whom he presents as : "the real support of his family", endowed with "excellent qualities", but lacking the health and physical constitution necessary for the profession of arms. Relying on medical certificates, Michaud insists on the young man's infirmities and speaks for an honest, hard-working family, pleading for a favorable decision: "...I am to you the interpreter of a hard-working and honest family, which is asking for its salvation." The letter concludes with the usual formula of deference: "Your most humble and obedient servant". followed by the signature: "Michaud de l'Académie française".
