MICHAUD (Joseph François) (1767 - 1839) Historian, journalist, member of the Académie française. Autograph letter signed to Joseph Toussaint Reinaud, with manuscript attached. S.l.n.d. (circa 1830). Set of 3 manuscript pieces mounted on wove paper: 1 L.A.S. (1 p. in-12) 1 autograph manuscript entitled Notes sur le Caire (2 pp.) 1 old mounting sheet Letter addressed to the orientalist Joseph Toussaint Reinaud, in which Michaud solicits his help in writing an article on Arabic songs: "...so that I can say a few words about the volume of Arab songs... what are these songs, what is their spirit... I cannot say anything reasonable without you..." The enclosed manuscript is a direct record of his trip to the Orient, containing ethnographic observations on daily life in Cairo: popular food (beans, unleavened bread, dates, sesame) social and economic habits living conditions and climate perception of disease and the Egyptian people The set is set against the backdrop of Michaud's trip to the Orient (circa 1830), which gave rise to his Correspondance d'Orient.
