MASSON (Frédéric) - Lot 173
MASSON (Frédéric) (1847 - 1923) French historian, specialist in the First Empire, member of the Académie française. Autograph letter signed "Frédéric Masson". Viarme(s) (Seine-et-Oise), August 31, 1900. 2 pages in-12, on "Clos des Fées" letterhead. Interesting historical and biographical letter. Masson replies to a request for information about Pusy, and discusses at length possible links with the Borghese family, particularly in the entourage of Pauline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister. He states that he has not found any conclusive evidence in his research, although he does offer some nuanced reflections on the many connections attributed to Pauline. In particular, he points out that her personal papers give a fairly accurate picture of her life, with no notable concealment, and that no corresponding names appear in her correspondence or archives. A revealing letter about the historian's critical method and his work on the imperial family. Beautiful cursive handwriting, neat signature.
