LIREUX (Auguste) - Lot 161
LIREUX (Auguste) Rouen, 1810 - 1870. French man of letters, journalist and publicist, a leading figure in the satirical press and Parisian feuilleton under the July Monarchy and the Second Republic. L.A.S. "A. Lireux" to "Mon cher Jacques" (Jacques Arago), no place or date, 1 ½ page in-8. Charming and witty autograph letter to Jacques Arago, man of letters, playwright and traveler, brother of the famous François Arago. The tone is lively, familiar and particularly lively. Lireux talks about sending out his journals and asks his correspondent to contribute to his publication: "I have sent you my little diaries". before continuing in a very personal and amused style: "a thousand nastinesses, gossip and witty things". A particularly tasty passage on an editorial project announced for Sunday: "a few lines - even twenty - on the gastronomy of the different peoples of the world". This theme, at once worldly, journalistic and literary, gives the letter a very XIXᵉ century charm. The text bears direct witness to Lireux's activity in the world of the satirical press and literary leaves, in connection with L'Indiscret, La Patrie, Le Charivari and the great journalistic networks of his time. Well-marked autograph signature at the end of the letter. Good overall condition; slight folds from use, small diffuse foxing not serious.
