LEGRAND DU SAULLE (Henri) - Lot 156
LEGRAND DU SAULLE (Henri) Dijon, 1830 - 1886. French psychiatrist. Autograph letter signed "Legrand du Saulle", addressed to Monsieur Mermet. Clamart, August 23, 1876. 1 page in-8. Charming, familiar letter in which Legrand du Saulle invites his correspondent and his family to spend a day at his home. The tone is cheerful and spontaneous, opening with a picturesque remark - "I'm starting to get rid of the workers! - which gives the story a lively flavor. The doctor details the precise route to take to reach his home from the Gare Montparnasse, evoking successively the train, the omnibus and then a few minutes' walk, before concluding on a convivial note: "If it's hot, we'll dine al fresco". An important figure in 19th-century French psychiatry, Legrand du Saulle was chief physician of the epilepsy department at the Salpêtrière hospital, where he carried out outstanding work on personality disorders and nervous affections. An engaging document, illustrating the private, everyday life of a great practitioner, in a friendly, family context.
