LEFEBVRE DU RUFLÉ (Noël Jacques) - Lot 148
LEFEBVRE DU RUFLÉ (Noël Jacques) Pont-Audemer, 1792 - 1877. French politician, representative of Eure, Minister of Agriculture, Commerce and Public Works under the Second Empire. L.A.S. to "Mon cher Monsieur Boulard", Quigny (?), Wednesday, February 5, 1834, 2 pp. in-8, brown ink on folded paper with autograph address and postmarks preserved. Important signed autograph letter, predating his ministerial functions, in which Lefebvre du Ruflé replies at length to his correspondent on the subject of Madame Wendel and the worrying situation of her family. The tone is particularly lively and almost romantic. The author evokes the latter's reckless spending, in very expressive terms: I want to "finish ruining my children with a thousand extravagant expenses". and again: "she's packing her trunks for a big trip on which she plans to spend some twenty thousand francs". The letter then takes an almost dramatic turn: "furious at not being able to hasten our ruin". The author discusses the condition of Mrs. Wendel's son, current estate affairs, the attempted sale of land, and a dispute with the notary in charge of the power of attorney. Very interesting passage on movable property: "the clock and two expensive vases were taken out of her house". A particularly lively document, combining family news, inheritance issues and financial difficulties. Beautifully presented, with handwritten address on verso and postmarks from 1834, adding to its bibliophilic and historical charm. Good condition despite wear folds, small marginal accidents and old stamp marks.
