LEBON (André). - Lot 147
LEBON (André). Born Dieppe, 1858-1938. French politician and financier. Deputy for Deux-Sèvres, several times minister, notably Minister of Colonies from 1896 to 1898, then Chairman of Crédit Foncier d'Algérie et de Tunisie. L.A.S. "André Lebon" to "Cher Monsieur" (M. Barbet). Paris, January 17, 1911. 1 page in-8, on printed letterhead of Crédit Foncier d'Algérie et de Tunisie, Cabinet du Président, address 43 rue Cambon, Paris. Charming autograph letter signed by André Lebon, an important figure in the Third Republic, both a statesman and a leading financial executive. Held back by an external obligation, Lebon courteously expresses his regret at not being able to honor an appointment: "It would have been a great pity not to be able to hear you". He points out that his wife will receive the following Friday, and will be delighted to meet the recipient and his entourage: "My wife receives on Friday; she will be delighted to meet you". The letter's worldly tone sheds light on the sociability of Paris's political and financial elites at the beginning of the 20th century, combining personal relationships, representational obligations and salon customs. A former Minister of the Colonies, André Lebon went on to become one of the great leaders of French capitalism in the Belle Époque, heading Crédit Foncier de France, then Crédit Foncier d'Algérie et de Tunisie, whose present letterhead provides a fine piece of context. An elegant piece, interesting both for political history and for French economic and colonial history.
