LÉAUTÉ (Henry) - Lot 145
LÉAUTÉ (Henry) (1847-1916) French engineer and mathematician, professor at the École Polytechnique. Autograph letter signed "H. Léauté" to Léon Labbé Vienna [Austria], September 6, 1901. 1 page 1/3 in-8, Vienna Grand Hotel letterhead. Letter concerning a candidacy for the Academy of Sciences Interesting letter addressed to Léon Labbé, a candidate for the Académie des Sciences following the death of Admiral de Jonquières. Léauté, then traveling in Austria after a stint in Italy and Germany, announces his imminent return to Paris and hints at his support, while referring to commitments already made: "I know your titles and you know my old friendship for you; it is therefore with pleasure that I will go on your side if I can...". He does, however, make it clear that he must respect any previous promises, illustrating the subtleties and arbitrations of academic voting.
