LANGLOIS (Victor) - Lot 138
LANGLOIS (Victor) Born Dieppe, 1829 - died 1869. Orientalist and numismatist, specialist in Armenian studies. Autograph letter signed "Victor Langlois", addressed to "Monsieur" [bookseller in Dieppe]. Paris, October 10, 1861. 2 pages in-8. Interesting business letter concerning the allocation of works by the administration. Langlois informs his correspondent that he has visited the offices of the Ministry of State, where he has been given "unofficially the list of works granted to you", thus underlining the sometimes informal channels of administrative information. He goes on to discuss practical issues relating to acquisitions, notably the "Classiques Didot", expressing a certain reluctance to proceed with a purchase that might duplicate works already granted by the administration: "I don't dare acquire it yet... my acquisition might duplicate". This document sheds light on the relationships between scholars, booksellers and public institutions in the 19th century, as well as the mechanisms for enriching provincial libraries and the bibliophilic precautions associated with large publishing collections.
