LABBÉ (Léon). - Lot 127
LABBÉ (Léon). Born in Le Merlerault (Orne), 1832 - died in Paris, 1916. French surgeon and politician. Professor of clinical surgery, member of the Académie de Médecine, he also pursued a political career, becoming Senator for Orne. An influential figure in Parisian medicine during the Third Republic. Autograph letter signed "Dr. Labbé", addressed to Madame Renault. Paris, January 25, 1913. 2 pages in-16. Senate letterhead. Interesting political letter written in the context of the presidential election of January 1913, which saw the accession of Raymond Poincaré to the presidency of the Republic. Labbé, who had defended Poincaré's wife in the face of certain attacks, congratulates his correspondent and expresses his satisfaction with the result: "...you must be very happy with the result of the day of January 17. It is a great happiness for our country...". He also delivers a more personal assessment of the political mores of his time, evoking "the poor human species" and "wicked people", giving this post a tone that is both engaged and disillusioned.
