JUSSIEU (Antoine-Laurent de) - Lot 124
JUSSIEU (Antoine-Laurent de) Lyon, 1748 - Paris, 1836. Botanist, founder of the natural classification of plants. FOURCROY (Antoine-François, comte de) Paris, 1755 - 1809. Chemist and statesman, member of the Institut. Signed "A. L. de Jussieu" and "de Fourcroy". S.l., September 17, 1783. 1 1/4 pages in-4. Interesting administrative document bearing the joint signatures of two major figures in French science at the end of the 18th century. Written in the form of a reply to a request, the text refers to a dispute concerning the appointment of shepherds and the management of rights related to a rural farm. In particular, the signatories ask for clarification on decisions made by a certain "Mr. Dash" and on the situation of a "châtelain", stating: "...Mr. Dash will be asked why he has suddenly made appointments of shepherds (...); Mr. Chatelain (...) will be asked to make known what the S. Gleine is...". This document, typical of the administrative management of the time, provides concrete evidence of the involvement of leading scientists in institutional and economic affairs, over and above their scientific work. The joint presence of Jussieu, a founding figure of modern botany, and Fourcroy, a major player in chemistry and scientific reform during the Revolution, makes this document of particular interest. Good condition.
