JAUME (Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Marie) - Lot 118
JAUME (Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Marie) (known as Mgr Jaume) French prelate, bishop of Nevers in the mid-19ᵉ century, involved in the religious and educational debates of his time. Autograph letter signed "Mgr Jaume" to "Monsieur l'abbé". Nevers, July 18, 1857 2 pages in-4, on letterhead printed "Évêché de Nevers", folded. Interesting letter of a doctrinal and pastoral nature, in which the bishop replies to his correspondent on the subject of publications for Christian teaching. He announces the dispatch of a "prospectus from the Library of Christian Classics", stating that "works indicated for the 4ᵉ are about to appear", and evokes the gradual distribution of these texts intended for the formation of young minds. The letter takes on a broader dimension when he addresses contemporary religious and social issues: he laments "the depth of evil" afflicting society, and speaks of "our poor world" facing persistent ills. However, he is confident in the effectiveness of the efforts undertaken, noting that "something is working that we are succeeding in", thanks to the encouragement coming "either from the clergy or from the laity". The tone blends moral reflection, educational concerns and encouragement, revealing a prelate attentive to the spread of Christian ideas in a changing society. Good condition, despite wear creases.
