HUBBARD (Nicolas-Gustave) - Lot 115
HUBBARD (Nicolas-Gustave) (Fourqueux, Yvelines, 1828 - 1888) French economist and historian, author of works on financial and administrative issues, and keen observer of parliamentary life under the Third Republic. Autograph letter signed, "G. Hubbard", addressed to "Monsieur le Directeur". Paris, September 1880. 1 page in-8, on Chambre des Députés - Questure letterhead. Interesting account of parliamentary life Letter addressed to the director of the newspaper Le Parlement, in which Hubbard transmits a note intended to report on an episode that occurred in the Chamber itself. The document is accompanied by a short text recounting "what happened today inside the session room, when the sitting was adjourned shortly after the reading of the minutes". Here, the author acts as an intermediary between the parliamentary institution and the press, illustrating the mechanisms for disseminating political information at the end of the 19th century. Through this communication, Hubbard bears witness to the concern for precision and responsiveness that characterized exchanges between administrative circles and press organs specializing in political life. Of interest An interesting document for several reasons: official paper of the Chambre des Députés, bearing the letterhead of the Questure ; direct testimony to the internal workings of Parliament under the Third Republic; an illustration of the relationship between the administration and the political press; it reveals the role of intermediaries in the circulation of parliamentary information. While its content remains brief, it is fully in keeping with the institutional and journalistic history of the late 19th century. Context Nicolas-Gustave Hubbard belongs to a generation of intellectuals and civil servants engaged in public life, whose work and correspondence shed light on the administrative and political practices of their time. Here, his work as an economist and historian is coupled with a concrete presence in parliamentary information circuits.
