HERVÉ, Édouard - Lot 113
HERVÉ, Édouard (Saint-Denis de La Réunion, 1835 - Paris, 1899) Journalist and politician, member of the Orleanist party. Autograph letter signed "E. Hervé", addressed to a lady. [Paris], November 30, 1898. 1 page ¼ in-8. Charming letter of intimate and grateful tone, written in the last years of his life, where Édouard Hervé introduces himself with touching humility: "it is a sick man or worse, a cripple, who thanks you for the charming dispatch of Glanes de la Vie". Saying that he was detained at his work table, he regrets not being able to travel to pay "the tribute of his gratitude and his old friendship", thus delivering a personal testimony imbued with sincerity and melancholy. The letter refers to the collection Glanes de la Vie, a work of thoughts by Countess Diane (pseudonym of Marie Joséphine de Suin, Countess de Beausacq), published in 1898 with a preface by Pierre Loti, which places this document in a literary and worldly network of the late XIXᵉ century. A touching document, revealing a man who was weakened but remained sensitive to intellectual and friendly exchanges.
