HENRI-ROBERT (Henri) - Lot 112
HENRI-ROBERT (Henri) (Paris, 1863 - 1936) Lawyer, President of the Paris Bar Association, a leading figure in the Parisian bar under the Third Republic. Autograph letter signed, "Henri-Robert", addressed to a commander. 98, boulevard Pereire, Paris, January 29, 1936. 1 page in-4. Retained envelope, postmark Paris (Jan. 1936) and mention of the 1937 International Exhibition. Intervention request for incorporation into the Republican Guard Letter in which Henri-Robert requests his correspondent's support in facilitating the rapid incorporation of a young man into the ranks of the Republican Guard. He recommends a certain Francis Sauvat, aged 25, formerly attached to the service of Council President Pierre Laval, about whom he declares he can provide "excellent information". He explicitly asks: "...summoning him, telling him what to do and lending him your powerful support for immediate success." The letter is a perfect illustration of the mechanisms of intercession and recommendation within the political and administrative networks of the Third Republic. Interest Document of particular interest for : the status of the signatory, President of the Paris Bar, a major figure in the legal world ; the explicit mention of Pierre Laval, a leading political figure; concrete content: direct intervention for an appointment/incorporation; evidence of networks of influence and recommendation within the French administration; the presence of an envelope with a postmark and mention of the 1937 International Exhibition. Context The letter is set in a politically sensitive period (1930s), marked by the importance of personal networks in administrative and military careers. Here, Henri-Robert acts as an influential intermediary, mobilizing his credit to support a candidate who already had a link with the circles of power.
