HADAMARD (Jacques-Salomon) - Lot 104
HADAMARD (Jacques-Salomon) (1865-1963) French mathematician, member of the Académie des Sciences. Typescript with autograph additions S.l.n.d. 1 page in-4, with 5 autograph lines on verso. With attached typed fragment with autograph corrections. Remarkable document on the psychology of mathematical invention. Interesting document written as part of an investigation into mathematical teaching, focusing in particular on phenomena of sudden inspiration. The text proposes a questionnaire structured into six questions (A to F) on the mechanisms of creative thinking. On the back, Hadamard adds a particularly significant question in his own handwriting: "Do you ever observe 'automatic writing', that is, writing while thinking of something else [...] a word quite different from the one you were thinking of writing?" Enclosed is a typed extract from Graham Wallas's The Art of Thought, translated into French, with autograph corrections.
