HAAS (Eugène Lachat, known as Mgr Haas) - Lot 103
HAAS (Eugène Lachat, known as Mgr Haas) Boécourt, 1819 - Lucerne, 1888 Swiss prelate, Bishop of Basel, an important figure in Swiss Catholicism in the XIXᵉ century, involved in the tensions between Church and civil authorities during the Kulturkampf. Autograph letter signed "+ Eugène, évêque de Bâle" to a parish priest (probably in France). Lucerne, May 16, 1874 4 pages in-4, on "Évêché de Bâle" letterhead, folded. Long and remarkable letter written from the bishop's Lucerne exile, forced to leave his see in the context of politico-religious conflicts in Switzerland. Addressing "Monsieur le Curé" with deference, he evokes the bonds of friendship forged through mutual acquaintances, and thanks his correspondent for his offer of hospitality to priests from his diocese, victims of repressive measures: "among those whom the Bernese tyranny has proscribed". The text develops a poignant reflection on the situation of the Swiss clergy: "old men who have spent 30 or 40 years in the parish missions [...] have sacrificed everything for the faith". He emphasizes the sacrifices made by both priests and faithful, and commends the latter to the prayers of his correspondent. The letter is a direct and moving testimony to the Swiss Kulturkampf, illustrating the persecution suffered by Catholic clergy and the international solidarity that was organized at the time. The tone, both dignified and grateful, blends descriptions of hardships, appeals to charity and affirmations of faith. Good overall condition, with some wear and tear.
