GIGNIAUT (Joseph) - Lot 97
GIGNIAUT (Joseph) Born in Paray-le-Monial in 1794 - died in 1876. French Hellenist, member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Autograph letter signed "Gigniaut", addressed to "Monsieur". S.l., [ca. 19ᵉ century]. 1 page small in-12. Short business letter relating to academic work. In it, Gigniaut indicates that he presented the name of his correspondent to the Académie at a recent session, while requesting a bibliographical clarification deemed essential: a missing date concerning a work. He urged his interlocutor to provide this information before the January 4 meeting, in order to complete the examination of the dossier. This bill bears witness to the internal workings of learned academies in the XIXᵉ century, where scholarly accuracy and verification of sources were fundamental requirements in the evaluation of works and candidacies. Autograph signature.
