GERMAIN (Abel-Anastase) - Lot 96
GERMAIN (Abel-Anastase) Coutances, 1833 - 1897 French prelate, bishop of Coutances, trained at the Bayeux seminary, orator renowned for the elegance and vigor of his eloquence. Autograph letter signed "A. Germain" to "Monsieur le Curé Bayeux, June 15, 1874 2 ½ pages in-8, on "Diocèse de Bayeux - Paroisse de la Cathédrale" letterhead. A well-developed and nuanced letter, in which Abbé Germain delicately expresses his regret at not being able to honor a commitment. While thanking his correspondent with marked sensitivity - "your letter finds me... grateful and sensitive" - he evokes the constraints of his ministry, between liturgical obligations and accumulated fatigue: "the prospect of a new anniversary at La Délivrande... and the need to take... a few days' rest, which is more necessary to me today than ever". The tone, both sincere and conciliatory, testifies to a deep attachment to friendly ties: he hopes that this refusal "which costs [his] affection" will not alter its sincerity. This letter is a fine illustration of the pastoral burden placed on clergy in the XIXᵉ century, and the delicacy of relations between ecclesiastics. Good condition.
